Diet, physical activity, or both for prevention or delay of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its associated complications in people at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus.
B. Hemmingsen et al. Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2017.
Background:
Projected rise in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can develop into substantial health problem in the US and worldwide. Whether diet, physical activity or both can prevent or delay T2DM and its associated complications in at-risk patients is unknown.
Results:
12 Random controlled trials randomizing 5,238 people were included to see affects of diet, physical activity, or both helped prevent or delayed T2DM associated complications.
Conclusions:
No firm evidence that diet alone or physical activity alone compared to standard treatment influences the risk of T2DM and its associated complications. However, diet plus physical activity reduces or delays the incidence of T2DM in people with impaired glucose tolerance. Data is lacking for the effect of diet plus physical activity for people with intermediate hyperglycemia.
Recommendations:
Diet and physical activity have minor roles in management of T2DM and not so much in the T2DM complications. The one thing not expressed in this article was what type of “diet” was used in this review. The Low Carbohydrate High Fat (Ketogenic Diet) has been shown to help reverse T2DM and avoid the nasty complications associated with T2DM.
